How to Beach Bum It Like a True San Diegan

Between its spectacular coastline and laidback vibes, San Diego is a beach-lover’s paradise. Check out these five tips to becoming a bonafide beach bum—or at least a wannabe one.

1. No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem

People who live here always seem to be losing some article of clothing or another. Every local has at least one neighbor who doesn’t seem to own a shirt. To truly embrace the beach bum life, start by kicking something off—even if it’s just your shoes—and liberate yourself!

2. Bike to the Beach

One sign of a true beach bum? When they’re biking to the beach with their surfboards tucked under their arm. While we only recommend you attempt this coordination feat if you’re truly experienced, any one of these on their own is enough to qualify you as a beach bum!

3. Eat a California Burrito

The California Burrito (aka Cali) is a San Diego invention and staple. This jumbo burrito filled with carne asada, French fries, guacamole, and cheese then topped with salsa is basically a work of art and an absolute must try. Take one to go and experience the magic on the beach!

4. Drink Craft Beer

There must be something in the water here because this town is chock full of local breweries. However you prefer your hops, we guarantee there’s a craft brew for you. Even if you’re not much of a beer lover, many of San Diego breweries are also full-service restaurants.

5. Watch the Sunset

Sunsets are beautiful wherever you are, but it’s hard to top a San Diego one. Elevate your experience by heading to famous lookout spots like Sunset Cliffs or even just from the hot tub or rooftop of your resort!
